In September of 1986, there was a resolution of the Fire Trustees Association proposing a fire service training facility made up of departments in the center area of Jefferson County.
In January of 1987, the Fern Creek Fire Protection District took the lead and attempted to get all of the center area departments to commit to funding $10,000 a year for 10 years a regional fire training facility. By February of 1987, the Highview FPD, and Buechel FPD joined with the Fern Creek FPD and committed to the funding of the Academy, and began the process of incorporation.
The three departments incorporated as the Jefferson County Fire Training Academy, Inc. in October of 1987 and adopted the first By-Laws of the Incorporation.
In February of 1988, the Academy began attempts to purchase 60.6 acres on Seatonville Road. After many offers and counter-offers, the offer was removed in 1992.
Tax exemption for the Academy was accomplished in September of 1982.
In 1993, the Jeffersontown Fire Protection District joins as a member.
In June of 1995, an offer was made for 98 acres off of Fegenbush Lane. The offer was rejected by the land owner.
In September of 1995, an offer was made for the 78 acres Fairmount Road property. After several counter-offers, the deal was approved and the Fairmount Road property became the Academy site in November of 1995.
In January of 2001, the Lyndon FPD and the Worthington FPD became members.
In May of 2005, the Okolona FPD became a member, and in September of 2005, the Zoneton FPD joins as a member.
In March of 2006, the Mt. Washington FPD became the ninth member of the Training Academy.
